The Public Data Viewer shows all publically-available stream temperature monitoring stations and timeseries in the SHEDS database.
Stations and timeseries are marked as either public or private. Only stations marked as public will be visible on this page. If you are a member of a participating agency, first log in and then go to the Manage Data section to view all data for your agency (including both public and private).
Initially, the page shows all publically-available stations across the northeast. Use the filters located to the right of the map to focus on specific stations by either 1) watershed (HUC), or 2) start/end dates of associated stream temperature timeseries. When any of the filters are changed, the map and station list below will automatically update and only show the stations meeting both filter criteria.
To view the metadata and stream temperature time series for a specific station, click the station on the map or click the Details link beside the station in the list below.
The chart will show the stream temperature measurements for a single time series collected at the selected station. The table to the left of the chart will list each individual time series. Click on a row in this table to view a different time series.
To download stream temperature data for multiple stations, use the Download Cart.
To add stations to your cart, first select them from the station list by clicking the checkmarks on the left-hand side of the table. After selecting one more stations, click the Add Selected Stations to Cart button. A single station can also be added to the cart from the Station Detail tab by clicking the Add to Cart button.
When you have finished adding stations to your cart, click the Checkout button above the station list. You will then be asked to review the stations in your cart, specify options regarding data formats, enter your email address, and finally submit a download request. When the data has been extracted from the database, an email will be sent to you containing a link to download the files.
To download all stream temperature data associated with a single station: select the station on the map or click the Details link from the station list table, then click the Time Series (CSV) button located on the Station Detail tab.
The station list table can be downloaded as a CSV file using the buttons below the table.
Click the icon in the top-right corner of each box to view more information. Click the icon to minimize a box.
This map shows all stations with publically available stream temperature data.
Click a point on the map to view station details and associated stream temperature data.
The Station List tab provides a list of all available stations. Click one of the column headers to sort the list, or use the text boxes/dropdowns to filter the list and find which stations meet your criteria. Click the Details link view the metadata and stream temperature data associated with a station.
When a station is selected, the Station Detail tab shows the metadata and time series chart of associated stream temperature data.
By default, the time series chart shows the stream temperature values based on the Raw Data (blue line). Click the Daily Mean/Range button to view the mean (blue line) and min/max range (gray band) of each day instead.
If the Day button is selected and no gray band is shown then the time series data were probably pre-aggregated to daily time steps before being imported into the database.
To zoom in on the time series chart, use your mousewheel or trackpad to "scroll", and then click-and-drag to move the time series left/right.
Click Show Air Temp to see the daily mean air temperature (green line) at this station. Air temperature data are extracted from the ORNL Daymet database. Currently, this dataset covers the period 1980 - 2015, and thus no air temperature data are available before 1980 or after 2015.

By default, this chart will show "Raw" temperature measurements if there are fewer than 5,000 individual measurements, otherwise it will show the daily mean (blue line) with min/max range (gray band). Use the buttons in the upper right to switch between views of the Raw Data and Daily Mean/Range. Note that if the Daily Mean/Range view is selected and a gray band is not shown, then that means the raw data were uploaded at daily time steps and thus there is no information about the range of values on each day.
Use the mousewheel (or double click) to zoom in and out. Click and drag to pan left/right after zooming in.
